The Lord's Supper (Breaking of Bread)

communion_1Each Sunday morning at 9:30, we take time to remember and worship Christ during the Lord's Supper service (also referred to as the "Breaking of Bread").  This time of worship is "the Lord's Supper" because it belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.  His person and work are the focus.

Before going to the Cross to die for our sins, Jesus gathered His closest followers together. After breaking bread and drinking a cup of wine with them, He commanded them to "Do this in remembrance of Me" (Luke 22:19, 1 Corinthians 11:24-25). He explained that the bread represents His body and the cup His blood "poured out for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:26-28). The early church took Christ's command seriously and remembered Him often in this way (Acts 2:46).

This public expression of obedience, worship and thanksgiving to Jesus Christ through the Breaking of Bread brings Him glory and honor which He rightly deserves.

All who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior are encouraged to participate in this important service.  God's Word teaches that only true believers who are not harboring unconfessed sin can appropriately participate. We encourage those who attend to take seriously the command of Scripture for each person to "examine himself before he eats" to avoid eating and drinking "judgment" or discipline (1 Corinthians 11:27-32).

Because the act of remembering Christ is so important to Him, it's a priority for us too.  This is why the Lord's Supper is one of Westside Bible Fellowship's core meetings and why we take time to remember and worship Him each week.

The Lord Jesus knew that we are a forgetful people. He knew that the idols of this world could easily distract us from a life daily devoted to Him. It's essential that we constantly remind each other of the precious and inexhaustible truth of who our Lord and Savior is and what He has done.  As we remember Him together, the knowledge and appreciation for Christ and His work becomes a catalyst that can help us experience the daily power and victory over sin that is available to us through His death, and resurrection.
